Slingshot Biosciences is seeking an experienced Process Development Scientist to support the scaling and transfer of our synthetic cell product lines from R&D into Manufacturing in a design control environment.  Proactive communication, diligent execution and documentation of complex workflows, and a highly collaborative mindset are critical to success in this role.  We also place a premium on creativity, intellectual curiosity, flexibility, resiliency, drive, and a proactive, can-do attitude.  This is a full-time, on-site position at Slingshot’s headquarters in Emeryville, CA, reporting to the Senior Manager of Process Development.  For the successful candidate this will be a fantastic opportunity in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and a chance to deliver products that will positively impact human health.

Responsibilities

  • Transform small-scale R&D synthesis workflows (e.g., conjugation of biomarkers to synthetic cells) into validated, sustainable, production-scale manufacturing workflows in close collaboration with R&D scientists, systems engineers, and manufacturing technicians.
  • Design, execute, optimize and validate biochemical conjugation processes, reagent formulations, flow cytometry based assays, QC test methods, verification and validation studies, and stability studies.
  • Identify critical raw materials as well as alternatives, validate alternate suppliers. 
  • Ensure that product vision is maintained and realized through execution and documentation of design control processes, and conduct technical and design reviews.
  • Create manufacturing procedures and documentation, BOMs, routings, costing, etc. for transfer to internal and external teams.
  • Support and/or coach R&D/manufacturing staff in similar scale-up and transfer efforts as needed.
  • Monitor production workflows after hand-off, continually identifying areas for process improvement, risk mitigation, optimization, and automation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • PhD in bioengineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field with 5+ years industry experience, or Masters with 8+ years industry experience, or Bachelors with 10+ years experience.
  • Experience in several of the following is required (the more the better): conjugation chemistry, biochemistry, flow cytometry, reagent formulation, process and test method optimization/validation, microfluidics, technology transfer, design of experiment, experience in a start-up environment.
  • Experience with the following is preferred: lab automation (especially automated liquid handling, e.g. Hamilton or similar), stability studies, immunoassays, polymer chemistry, protein expression systems, statistical methods, design control including V&V / Gage R&R, project management, quality management system, GMP, ISO-13485.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proactive approach to time management and effective task prioritization.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness and ability to troubleshoot experimental issues independently.
 
Our salary ranges are calculated by role and level. Your position within that range will be determined by your job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, and training/certifications. In addition to those factors, we also examine internal equity as well as consider current market rate, and title may be assessed one level lower or higher accordingly. After you join the company your performance, contributions, and results along with business and organizational needs will affect your base salary. The base salary range for this full-time position is between $120,000 – $150,000 + equity + benefits.
