THE ROLE: Design Director – Packaging + Innovation

Do you live and breathe design? Are you passionate about creating inspiring and meaningful designs with a solution-focused mindset? As the Design Director of Packaging + Innovation, you’ll be at the very forefront of the development and execution of iconic and disruptive packaging designs across a new range of products that will extend OLLY outside of its current VMS category. Treating packaging as an extension of the iconic OLLY brand and delivering brand-right designs that reflect the overall concept and business strategy. In collaboration with cross-functional partners and vendors, they develop the design of all components of the product packaging experience 2D and 3D, including the color scheme, icons, illustration, graphic elements, secondary packaging, etc., driving decision-making, timelines, and overall delivery of projects on brief and on-time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  •   Lead the conceptualization and realization of innovative product designs and packaging for OLLY’s new product evolution.
  •  Collaborate with the VP of Creative and cross-functional teams to ideate disruptive packaging forms that set OLLY apart on shelves.
  •  Develop characters, icons, typography, color schemes, and patterns for products and packaging.
  •  Analyze market trends, customer needs, and product details to conceptualize effective packaging designs across a diverse range of products. 
  •  Meet with suppliers and consumer groups to produce ideas that meet our disruptive brand values. 
  •  Work with engineers to create packaging prototypes and create compelling mockups for presentations.
  •  Ensure precise execution of production mechanicals for both product and packaging, leveraging knowledge of printing equipment and processes in collaboration with Technical Designers.
  •  Efficiently manage projects and timelines to ensure on-time delivery.

CAPABILITIES + SKILLS REQUIRED

  •   Demonstrated expertise in CPG packaging, preferably in Personal Care or Beauty.
  •  10-12 years of design experience within an agency or in-house creative team.
  •  Proven ability to build brands and integrate consumer feedback, testing insights, and stakeholder input into designs.
  •  Track record of taking products from concept to execution.
  •  Agile, proactive, and collaborative approach to work.
  •  Deep understanding of typography, color theory, and strong design aesthetic judgment.
  •  Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, with expertise in graphic design, mechanical die lines, and some illustration or rendering skills, is advantageous.
  •  In-depth knowledge of industry trends in Personal Care and Beauty.
  •  Excellent presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate creative concepts to stakeholders.
  •  Strong communication skills with the ability to provide thoughtful and actionable feedback.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • Initial video screen with a member of our Talent team
  • Round 1: Conversation with the Hiring Manager + 1-2 conversations with other Ollies on the team
  • Round 2: 2-3 conversations with team or cross functional Ollies
  • Final Round: Homework*

*At OLLY, our final round is called Homework. Candidates who participate in this round are given 3 questions in advance to answer and present to the interview panel they previously spoke with in the process. We understand every candidate is different. THE DETAILS 

LOCATION: Remote, U.S. (preference for San Francisco or Los Angeles based candidates)

HOURS: Full time, exempt (salary)

MANAGER: VP Creative

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.  

The pay range for this position is $149,000 – $182,000 dependent on experience and location.
