Who we are

Balanced is an early-stage, venture-backed startup creating a digital fitness platform to build a healthspan that matches our new lifespans.

The next frontier of healthcare is preventative – not reactive. The industry today focuses a large majority of resources on reactive treatments for disease.

We are committed to helping older adults maintain vibrancy in their lives, with an exercise platform that promises community, joy, and a personalized experience to rebel against the decline of aging.

We’re proudly a NYC-based company with a hybrid schedule. We’re in pursuit of product-market-fit and co-locate at our production studio on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Role overview

First and foremost, we’re looking for people who are excited about what we’re doing. We’re building a product for healthy aging (50+) to have a true impact on their physical and mental wellbeing. You’ll help us creatively solve problems and delight our customers. The scope of impact is as wide as it gets – acquisition, onboarding, and engagement. We’re designing a digital fitness experience for the 100M 50+ in the United States. To say your impact will be big is an understatement.

As our first product design hire, you’ll be responsible for setting our design foundation and bringing our first product to life through thoughtful collaboration with our early customers, founders, and internal stakeholders. You’ll thrive in this role if you like fast-paced exploration and have a passion for iterating quickly. You’ll inspire and advocate for the Balanced member by practicing design maturity through the presentation of design rationale, facilitation, and storytelling across cross-functional teams.

What you’ll do:

  • Work with the founders directly and product team to distill product goals into thoughtful user experiences,
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to bring your experiences to life,
  • Collaborate with marketing and creative for top of funnel lead generation,
  • Lead all phases and aspects of design from vision, strategy, research, ideation, UX architecture, flows, interactions to wireframes, testing, and polished visual design,
  • Make data-driven decisions that translate business goals into product experiences, and distill complexity into simple and elegant member experiences.
  • Help set design expectations and frameworks for our growing team,
  • And help start the in-house product design function.

Why you might not be excited about us

  1. We’re small, so if you like more established companies, it’s not (yet) the right time. You’ll help us define and build our company’s culture.
  2. Since we’re an early-stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.
  3. We can’t (yet) provide close mentorship for junior designers. As we grow, we’ll get a lot better at this.
  4. Since you’ll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You’ll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.

About you

None of these are requirements but do describe the kinds of people that we think would be most effective at Balanced right now.

  1. 5+ years experience shipping high-impact and successful digital products across mobile and web at consumer-facing/focused products and brands.
  2. You’re comfortable with – not just tolerant of – change and uncertainty.
  3. You operate with transparency.
  4. Happy to try things out to validate new features, and move on if they no longer serve a problem.
  5. Excited for a front-row seat at an early-stage company. Things will change a lot!
  6. Enjoy thinking through trade-offs, with both mindfulness of short-term needs and our long-term direction.
  7. Strong communication and storytelling skills.
  8. A pattern of curiosity and skill-building over time.
  9. Understand and value the agile development process – 100 quick wins > 1 large project.

Joining our team

Interview process

1. Meet us and learn about Balanced

You’ll first talk to Katie (over phone or video) and won’t need to prepare anything in advance. The goal of this conversation is to get to know you and mutually explore if we might be a good fit for each other. You’ll learn more about Balanced and have the chance to ask any questions about our company, team culture, and product.

If we’re both excited to continue, we’ll send along a bunch of information about the company that you can go through on your own time. You’ll then have the opportunity to chat with other people in our company to learn more about them and the company.

2. Design practical & pairing exercise

For selected candidates, we’ll move into a practical with a design exercise that you’ll work on independently (~1-2 hours) before reviewing virtually with a few members of our team. We’ll give active feedback and engage in a discussion to simulate what a realtime jam session would be like if we were to work together. This is primarily used to get a better feel for your experience, how you work, and where you may fit in. It’ll be used to design the rest of the interview process.

3. Onsite

We’d then love for you to come onsite and meet more of the team at our production studio in DUMBO. The onsite would be around ~3 hours. Our conversations would explore customer feedback, discovery, and implementation / engineering alignment / and collaboration with product and marketing.

4. Reference conversations

We will talk to a few people you’ve worked with before or who know you best to learn more about how we can best work with you and set you up for success. We expect to hear great things, so this is primarily so we can work with you as effectively as possible.
