Balanced is hiring a consumer-centric and data-driven Product Lead to own roadmapping for our consumer experience working with stakeholders across Engineering and Design, in collaboration with our broader team of Growth Marketing, Clinical, Production, and Trainer Talent.
Who we are
Balanced is an early-stage, venture-backed startup creating a digital fitness platform to build a health span that matches our new lifespans.
The next frontier of healthcare is preventative – not reactive. The industry today focuses a large majority of resources on reactive treatments for disease. We are committed to helping adults 55+ maintain vibrancy in their lives, with an exercise platform that promises community, joy, and a personalized experience to rebel against the decline of aging.
We love learning from each other and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.
We’re a New York City-based company with a hybrid schedule. We work in person at our production studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while Mondays, Fridays are remote-optional. Including one additional remote-week a month.

Role overview
First and foremost, we’re looking for people who are excited about what we’re doing. We’re building a product for older adults to have a true impact on their physical and mental wellbeing. You’ll help us creatively solve problems and delight our members.
This role will own roadmapping for our consumer experience working with stakeholders across Engineering, Design, Clinical, Production, and Trainer Talent. We’re looking for someone to advocate for the Balanced member and our champion our internal stakeholders by thoughtfully integrating them into our roadmapping abilities. You’ll work closely in tandem with the CEO to align on product vision and execution. We’re designing a digital fitness experience for the 100M 50+ in the United States. To say your impact will be big is an understatement.
The scope of impact is wide – your role will be responsible from onboarding, driving engagement, and building an experience folks can’t wait to return to. Our Growth Marketer, Kahn, currently owns the acquisition funnel, but naturally there will be overlap and collaboration in how we approach an effective and delightful onboarding together.
Responsibilities will include:
- Serving as a thought leader to the business on how to progress the overall product strategy and roadmap to meet member and team needs,
- Planning and implementing end-to-end solutions to advance the Balanced product – from user research, hypothesis testing, conducting user research, scoping features, and setting KPIs to test learnings, and constantly iterating to improve the experience for our members,
- Applying a data-driven mindset to understand what infrastructure we have and what additional infrastructure is needed in order to set KPIs, prioritize the most impactful features, and track launch success to understand the impact of product decisions,
- Collaborating both locally with Engineering/Design/Growth Marketing and team-wide to prioritizing the product backlog, pre-planning, prioritization and running user journey mapping sessions,
- Developing product documentation including specifications, wireframes, site maps, and process flows,
- Technical competency to negotiate and troubleshoot with engineering partners (e.g. understanding what APIs are but not needing to know how to write one),
- And clear communication of project phases and proactively alerting management of changes to scope, timelines, and resources, with the ability to articulate thoughts and express ideas effectively using oral, written, visual and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to gain understanding.
Tooling we use
We use Notion and Linear for day-to-day project management, Mode as our BI tool with added analytics from Heap, Hotjar, Google Analytics, and Intercom for member experience. Our web stack is TypeScript, React( Next.js ), Node / Express, Postgres, Python, and GraphQL. Services we use are Google Cloud, Sanity CMS, Auth0, TypeForm, Vimeo, and Google Tag Manager.
Why you might be excited about us
- We’re working to improve the quality of life and extend years for older adults. If you love health/wellness, fitness, and improving the lives of our aging population, you’ll love helping build our product.
- We’re small, so you’ll be able to contribute efficiently over big areas of our product.
- You’re not only comfortable in ambiguity, but you can thrive in ambiguity.
- You’ll have a huge impact in setting not only the tech org culture but company-wide culture. (We’re big fans of continuous improvement across all levels.)
- We’ll mold your role to shape a career you’re excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness and will help prep you for whatever you’re looking for in the future.
- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about your family and personal development and don’t expect you to be always engaged with work.
Why you might not be excited about us
- We’re small, so if you like more established companies, it’s not (yet) the right time. You’ll help us define and build our company’s culture.
- Since we’re an early-stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.
- We can’t (yet) provide close mentorship for junior employees. As we grow, we’ll get a lot better at this.
- Since you’ll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You’ll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.
About you
Who You Are
- Genuine excitement to get your hands dirty to drive and build product features from 0 to 1 in a pre-product-market fit environment,
- A champion of process. Knowing how to add light-weight workflows when needed, accountability to follow the set process, and adaptability to know when process should be enforced or adapted,
- Embody a growth mindset by approaching unknowns and new learning opportunities with excitement as we continue to develop an outstanding experience for our members,
- Good judgment via the exercise of critical thinking, analyzing and assessing problems and implications, identifying patterns, making connections of underlying issues, understanding risks and developing mitigation strategies, and taking ownership of the outcome,
- Empathetic with a desire to understand our members, our teammates, and the problem we’re working to solve in this space. An ability to see things from different perspectives, and a drive to align those perspectives to create something together,
- And demonstrate grit by having the courage to commit and persevere. You’re committed, earnest, and dive in to get the job done well with a positive attitude. We’re moving fast, it’s inevitable things will break, how we respond to it and learn from it is within our control.

Joining our team
Interview process
We want to get to know you, hear about what you’re interested in, and learn about what you hope to do in the future. We expect the interview process to take two weeks but can accelerate based on your personal situation. To apply, please email Kelly at kelly@hellobalanced.com with your resume and/or LinkedIn.
1. Intro conversation with the COO, Co-Founder
You’ll first talk to Kelly over a video call and won’t need to prepare anything in advance. The goal of this conversation is to get to know you and mutually explore if we might be a good fit for each other. You’ll learn more about Balanced and have the chance to ask any questions about our company, team culture, and vision.
2. Secondary conversation with the CEO, Co-Founder
Selected applicants will then be asked to speak with Katie, CEO and Co-Founder of Balanced. This conversation will focus on your past experience and expertise in the area. You’ll be able to hear more on the mission and a different perspective on the day to day at Balanced.
3. Technical exercise with teammates from Balanced
We’d love to learn how you think and how we work together as a team. We’ll provide a technical exercise ahead of time. The exercise should not take more than three hours of preparation – we intentionally would like you to stop at the third hour of work and then explain to us, if you have more time, where you would continue to take the problem statement.
4. Onsite in DUMBO
We’d then love for you to come onsite to visit our office and production studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn. You’ll meet more members of the team and get a feel for our office culture with further assessment from both sides on if this could be a good fit.
5. Reference conversations
We will talk to a few people you’ve worked with before or who know you best to learn more about how we can best work with you and set you up for success. We expect to hear great things, so this is primarily so we can work with you as effective as possible.
